Bartolo Colon Returning Saturday for Yankees

The Yankees have announced that Bartolo Colon will be their starter Saturday when they take on the Mets.

Colon was placed on the disabled list June 12th after straining his hamstring during one of his best efforts of the season.  The 38 year old had to be removed from his start the night before in which he held the Indians to only 2 hits over 6.2 scoreless innings.

New York signed Colon to a minor league deal this offseason as rotation insurance, but he has turned out to be much more for the club.  Before his injury, the Dominican native was able to log 78.1 innings at an ERA of 3.10.  He kept his WHIP at an impressive 1.07 and hitters could only muster a .227 batting average against the veteran.

While Colon didn’t make it back in the minimum 15 days as he hoped, his recovery was impressive nonetheless with his age and size.  The right hander worked hard and is excited to be back in the Yankees’ rotation.

"“I feel good,” Colon said through his interpreter. “I’m ready to come back and help the team. My bullpen went well. I’m happy to be back with everyone. I’m looking forward to Saturday.”"

Colon will be the first of several key returns for New York as the club is set to welcome back captain Derek Jeter Monday and right hander Phil Hughes soon after.
