Dylan Bundy’s Tale Getting Even More Tragic

Dylan Bundy was in about the same boat as Stephen Strasburg. He was going to be a sure fire deal and he was going to dominate the majors. Everything seemed to be on track when he hit the majors in 2012 at the ripe young age of 19. His stuff is electric and he has the frame to support prolonged success. His fastball hangs out in the upper 90s and he has complementary pitches that can befuddle opposing hitters.

But since he touched the Majors in 2012, he has not been back, at no fault of his own. He just cannot stay healthy.

After showcasing at 19 years of age, Dylan Bundy underwent Tommy John surgery in 2013.  He returned to the minors in 2014 before going down with a strained lat. He had been making significant strides since then, however all of that derailed when he started feeling pain in a cuff muscle of his throwing shoulder. An MRI revealed something that even baffled Dr. James Andrews: An unusually large build up of calcium (via SI.com).

Bundy told reporters: “It makes it more disappointing that it’s a rare case …so it’s a little scary …because we can’t say why it happened, how it happened.”

Baltimore Orioles’ Manager Buck Showalter spoke of the injury as well, saying: “Dylan throwing again is not imminent.” He went on to add that they were just going to shut down Bundy until more information became available.

Dylan Bundy’s case was already tragic enough. He was drafted 4th overall in 2011 and reached the Majors in 2012. That is unheard of in this day and age. The hurler was considered one of the most promising pitchers in baseball but again, you cannot help injuries, and Dylan Bundy has had more than his fair share of them.

Bundy said it best himself, the most disheartening thing about this whole scenario is that even Dr. James Andrews does not know what is going on in his throwing shoulder. Andrews has operated on athletes far and wide. He is the Dalai Lama of sports injuries. So when he is baffled, it is probably not a good thing.

The youngster deserves a good break or even just some good news, but there does not appear to be any such goodness in sight. With the rest of the season looking bleak, Bundy will have to wait an indefinite period of time before he is even allowed to throw again.

We wish Dylan Bundy all the best and hope that he can get back to the mound soon.
