Yankees Activate Derek Jeter

As expected, the Yankees activated Derek Jeter from the disabled list today. Jeter resumes his quest for 3000 tonight against the Cleveland Indians.

The captain has been out since June 13th with a strained calf.  He’s been activated after taking part in a pair of rehab contests this weekend.  Jeter is back in the lead off spot tonight for New York.

Not having their All-Star shortstop has been something for the club to get used.  Jeter’s only played in less than 148 games once since his rookie season of 1996.

"“Yeah, it is strange not seeing him every day and penciling his name in the lineup every day,” Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. “Derek’s real first year was 1996, the year that I came over [from the Rockies]. And he’s been in the lineup every day. So not to see him in there is really strange.”"

Jeter currently sits 6 hits shy of 3000.  The 37 year old will become the first Yankees to reach the historic plateau.
