Cubs Rumors: Chicago Still Looking to Add Pitchers

In the past few months, the Chicago Cubs have revamped their roster.  Gone are veterans Carlos Zambrano and Aramis Ramirez who have been replaced by the likes of Travis Wood, Chris Volstad and Anthony Rizzo.  Though the Cubs have made a flurry of moves this offseason, they are likely not finished tweaking their roster.  According to Carrie Muskat of MLB.com, the Cubs are still looking to add more pitchers.

Following the trade that sent young first baseman Anthony Rizzo to the Cubs, general manager Jed Hoyer stated that his club isn’t “finished acquiring starting pitchers”.  Hoyer noted that Chicago is looking to enter the 2012 season with “as much depth as possible”.

Though the club has already added Volstad and Wood as well as Manny Corpas and Andy Sonnanstine, Hoyer and the Cubs are “still very much in the process of gathering as many quality arms” as they can.  Hoyer said that he and Cubs president Theo Epstein will “continue to work hard” to acquire even more starters, as the club hopes to enter next season “seven, eight, nine deep in the rotation” as well as with a replenished bullpen.

Chicago has its sights set on at least one known player, veteran reliever Kerry Wood.  Both the Cubs and Wood appear set on a reunion, though reports that a deal was close to being completed now appear premature.  While Wood is still speaking with other clubs, it seems likely that he will ultimately end up back with the Cubs in 2012.

Beyond Wood, the Cubs could look to bring in high-ceiling pitching talent by trading starter Matt Garza.  The Cubs are reportedly seeking elite young arms in return for Garza, but Epstein has also said that he’s willing to build a future rotation around the 28-year-old.
