Jonathan Papelbon

The fact that two Phillies players make this list show the issues that the front office of Philadelphia are facing in the next several seasons. Papelbon might be their most glaring contract gaffe.  Following the 2011 season Papelbon was the biggest closer on the free agent market and the Phillies were determined to upgrade their bullpen.  Their solution to this was vastly overpay for Papelbon and outbid the others teams in the running by a large amount.  The deal: 4 years, $50 million.  This is a gigantic number for a closer; however, Papelbon had been one the best closers in baseball for several seasons and the Phillies weren’t going to find anyone more established.

The right-hander has performed disappointedly for fans and management alike and with his comments during this offseason regarding the Phillies clubhouse, the Phils are openly trying to get rid of the remaining $26 million on his contract which doesn’t include the vesting option for a third year that is included.  Papelbon has not pitched well enough to offset the off-beat comments and downright “weirdness” that Papelbon brings to the team.
