Mets’ rookie deGrom breaks Mets’ franchise record and ties MLB record
New York Mets’ right-handed start Jacob deGrom has been having a phenomenal rookie season. He may even be looking at recieving the National League rookie of the year award by the season’s end.
Besides being 8-6 with an amazing 2.62 ERA in 20 starts, deGrom is averaging close to a strikeout per inning. He increased that percentage Monday while at the same time breaking a Mets franchise record and tying a Major League Baseball record.
deGrom struck out the first eight batters to open Monday’s game as the Mets took on the Miami Marlins, tying the record that has been held by Houston Astros pitcher Jim Deshaies since 1986. Deshaies now shares that record with deGrom.
deGrom’s effort to break the record was derailed by the Marlins’ pitcher in the third inning. Marlins’ starter Jared Cosart singled to right after deGrom had already gotten Jordany Valdespin looking and Jeff Mathis to strikeout swinging to open the inning. deGrom then got the third out to end the inning on a ground ball by Christian Yelich.
Prior to the third inning deGrom had shut down the Marlins first six batters in the game Yelich, Donovan Solano, Casey McGehee, Marcell Ozuna, Justin Bour and Adeiny Hechavarria to tie the Mets’ franchise record for consecutive strikeouts to open a game.

He broke that record the in the third inning. It was previously held by Pete Falcone who accomplished the feat for the Mets in 1980.
deGrom kept the game scoreless through the sixth inning while also extending his consecutive innings streak of not having allowed an earned run to 28.
That streak ended in the seventh when deGrom allowed three runs to score and that was deGrom’s last inning of his historic day. Going into the bottom of the seventh down 3-2 to the Marlins, the Mets answered back with three more runs of their own.
Unfortunately for New York the Marlins came back in the top of the 8th inning to score another three runs eventually winning the game by a score of 6-5.
Even though the Mets took the loss and deGrom received a no-decision on his record setting day, it was still a very exciting and historic day at Citi Field. Especially for the 26-year-old rookie phenom who has taken the National League by storm in 2014.
