Lucroy ties Pudge’s record for doubles in a season by a catcher

Jonathan Lucroy gave the Milwaukee Brewers their first hit of the game when he doubled in the fourth inning of Thursday against the St. Louis Cardinals.

It was also his MLB leading 52nd double of the season but to top that off it was his 45th double while playing at the catcher’s position this season. That double tied Ivan Rodriguez‘s record for most doubles in a season by a catcher.

Rodriguez, better known to most baseball fans as simply “Pudge,” hit 45 doubles while playing catcher for the Texas Rangers in 1996.

Enroute to tying Pudge’s record he surpassed some very well-known catchers like Jorge Posada (40), Brian McCann (40), Jarrod Saltalamacchia (40) and even Yadier Molina (44), who is considered by many to be the best catcher currently in baseball.

Lucroy is going to be the first catcher to lead his league, let alone the both leagues, in doubles in a season. With approximately 10 games left to play in 2014 it seems unlikely that he won’t have the record for doubles by a catcher in a single season all to himself.

He is also just two doubles shy of breaking first baseman Lyle Overbay‘s Brewers’ franchise record. Overbay hit 53 doubles for the Brewers in 2004.

While not included in his season total, yet worth mentioning, Lucroy also hit two doubles in his first ever All-Star game. Depending on how you decide to look at it, Lucroy already holds the record.

Either way he’s on his way to making Major League Baseball history.
