The New York Mets have agreed to a deal for Carlos Gomez from the Brewers in exchange for Zack Wheeler and Wilmer Flores, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The deal is reportedly pending physicals.
The deal serves as a homecoming for Gomez, who was originally signed by the Mets as an amateur free agent back in 2002. Gomez debuted with the club as a 21-year-old in 2007 before being dealt to the Minnesota Twins as a part of the package for Johan Santana.

The two-time All-Star has seen a drop in his power production this year, as he’s on pace for his lowest home run total since 2011. Gomez has also seen a significant drop in his stolen base total, but has still been an above-average center fielder hitting .266 with eight home runs, 43 RBIs and 20 doubles. With Gomez also being a plus-defender in center field, which gives New York two above-average defenders in the outfield with Gomez and Juan Lagares.
The Brewers, in turn, get a high-promise pitcher in Wheeler that has already demonstrated ample success at the big-league level. The 25-year-old has a 3.50 ERA with a 8.5 career K/9 ratio in 49 starts between 2013 and 2014. He’s currently in the midst of recovering from Tommy John surgery, but is also under team control through the 2019 season and figures to be a significant factor in the Milwaukee rotation for seasons to come.
Milwaukee also gets middle infielder Wilmer Flores, who will likely take over immediately as the club’s starting third baseman. Flores could shift to shortstop if the Brewers ultimately trade incumbent Jean Segura, but will likely be best-served as Aramis Ramirez‘s replacement with Segura and Scooter Gennett manning the middle infield spots. Flores has put up solid numbers in 2015, posting a .249 average with 10 homers, 40 RBIs and 14 doubles.
The move serves as the second major acquisition by the Mets this week, as they also went out and got reliever Tyler Clippard from the Oakland Athletics on Monday, and previously dealt for Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson from the Atlanta Braves.
