The Baltimore Orioles have designated outfielder David Lough for assignment to make room for catcher Steve Clevenger, the club announced on Friday.
With new acquisitions Junior Lake and Gerardo Parra taking the majority of the playing time in the corner outfield, former platoon outfielder Nolan Remold has been moved to a fourth outfield spot, with Jimmy Paredes and Chris Davis also capable of handling the corner spots. The move left little opportunity for Lough, with Clevenger needed to serve as the catcher with Matt Wieters injured.

After posting an impressive .278 mark with impressive defense in two years with Kansas City, Lough was unable to consistently keep up his offensive numbers after coming over to Baltimore. In 303 combined at-bats, the 29-year-old hit a lowly .228 with eight home runs and 28 RBIs. Lough’s defense remained strong and he was a good source of speed, but the poor performance at the plate was often times too much to overlook when making the Orioles lineup card.
Because of his speed and defense, Lough could very well get picked up on waivers by a club looking for a bench bat. He’s under club control through 2019, so a non-contender could also pick Lough up in hopes that he rediscovers the form that gave him success at the plate prior to joining the Orioles.
