In the 2nd round of the 2013 draft, the St. Louis Cardinals drafted a talented young player from Florida high school. He’d struggled to get his bat to catch up to his tools until last season in AA, when he had a .769 OPS, 13 HR, and 38 SB. He’s put up excellent numbers in AAA in 2018, but has a crowded St. Louis outfield to crack. On Saturday, Mercado had a 1-3 day with a laced double and scored a run.

The Yankees and Red Sox are big time rivals, but their AAA squads face off on Sunday without quite the same fanfare, though with a very good pitching matchup. The RailRiders will be sending Justus Sheffield to the mound while the PawSox send William Cuevas to the mound in an afternoon tilt.

The Yankees drafted Taylor Widener in the 12th round of the 2016 draft out of the University of South Carolina. Widener fit the recent Yankees mold of a less-used college arm with high potential. He developed quickly in their system into a starter, producing well in 2017 in high-A. This year has been continued dominance in AA with his new organization after being traded to the Diamondbacks in the offseason. He had a big game Saturday, going 7 innings against Tennessee, allowing one run on 3 hits and a walk, striking out 13, even though he ended up tagged with the loss.

Akron and Richmond square off Sunday afternoon with two very impressive pitchers taking the hill. Richmond’s Chase Johnson continues to establish himself as a legit prospect in the Giants system as he recovers from injury that cost him much of the 2017 season. Triston McKenzie got a late start for Akron, but he is working to push his own prospect status beyond the top 15-20 status he already had coming into the season.
