Today, we continue our 2020 MLB season simulation for the National League.
In one decisive weekend – and with a major assist from the National League’s best team – the St. Louis Cardinals are back on top of the NL Central for the 2020 MLB season.
Consigned to third pace and slumping badly at the start of the month, the Cardinals leapfrogged the second-place Milwaukee Brewers by sweeping them in a July 4 weekend series in St. Louis.

And when the Arizona Diamondbacks polished off the Cincinnati Reds in Phoenix, the effect was to propel the Cardinals ahead of Cincinnati as well. It marked the first time St. Louis has held clear title to the division’s top spot since late May.
In other NL games over the holiday, the San Diego Padres won two of three from the New York Mets at Citi Field, the Dodgers defeated the Miami Marlins twice in Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Giants won two of three from the Colorado Rockies.
In inter-league games, the Washington Nationals won twice in a three-game series with the Houston Astros at Nationals Park. Elsewhere it was desolate news for NL teams: the Los Angeles Angels swept the Atlanta Braves, the Boston Red Sox swept the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Tampa Bay Rays took two of three from the Chicago Cubs, and the Seattle Mariners won two of three from the Philadelphia Phillies.
